Overactive Bladder

Overactive bladder is a common problem for both men and women which has many causes. It can lead to poor quality of life and bad sleeping habits.

Common symptoms of overactive bladder:

  • Urinary frequency – frequent need to pass urine
  • Urinary Urgency – the need to rush to the toilet to pass urine
  • Urinary incontinence – involuntary leaking following urinary urgency
  • Nocturia – waking up throughout the night to urinate

Treatments for Overreactive Bladder

Botox Bladder Injections

Once under general anaesthesia, Dr Al Sameraaii will insert a cystoscope through the urethra into the bladder. You will be given even injections of Botox into the bladder wall. The Botox will relax the bladder muscles and nerves which alleviate OAB symptoms.

It generally takes a week or two for the effects of Botox to work and can last between 6-9 months.

PTNS (Urgent PC)

The Patient will be set up on a recliner or on a bed in one of our rooms and Dr Al Sameraaii will insert a slim needle electrode near the patients ankle close to your tibial nerve.

The electrode is connected to the stimulator and turned on. The stimulator sends impulses through the tibial nerve up to the sacral nerves which are responsible for pelvic floor function and voiding. Stimulating these nerves quiets the overactive bladder, reducing bladder contractions and the number of signals sent to the brain.

Urgent PC required one session a week for twelve weeks. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes. After this weekly period, the patient will need one session a month and eventually one every three months to maintain the bladder function.
